Send in the Clowns

Sad Puppy Dog FaceIn April, we submitted Lullaby to two film festivals:  Screamfest and Shriekfest.  Since we live in the Los Angeles area, those two seemed to be the preferred choice consider they are both in LA.

So we have good news and bad news.

The bad news first.  Lullaby was not accepted by either festival.  This is not surprising or shocking in the least.  Sure, we are disappointed.  To put this in context, both Screamfest and Shriekfest are in the top 13 horror film festivals in the WORLD.  Plus with being in Los Angeles, if you’re an aspiring director who wants to get noticed then these are the festivals to make that happen.  Lullaby was just one of thousands of submissions.  Without a doubt, some higher quality films were accepted.

When creating Lullaby, we never dreamed of submitting it to festivals.  It was our intent to release the film to you for your enjoyment.

Currently, over 10,000 film festivals exist and I’m sure with enough time and patience we would eventually get accepted into one of those festivals.  However each festival has an entrance fee (around $25), so you can literally go broke submitting your film.  We didn’t budget for that so if either Shreikfest or Screamfest didn’t work out, then that was the end of our festival tour.

Now for the good news.  We will release Lullaby in time for Halloween!  We want to make some minor enhancements to the film before the release so we will certainly keep everyone posted.

We are currently in development for our next project.  Granted, we got stalled for a while.  We’re focusing more on telling a story that’s worth telling.  We’ll certainly keep you posted here and on our Facebook page as we make progress.

Lullaby Film Festival

Announcement on Lullaby

The people have spoken!  We’re going to festival!

If you haven’t done so already, check out our Facebook page and see the photos from our premiere.  It was held at the Huntington Beach Library with about 35 people in attendance.  Everyone had a great time.  I’ll admit it was pretty cool seeing our film on the big screen.

Many in attendance whole-heartedly recommended that we shop the film around to a few festivals.  Originally that was not our intent.  We just wanted to make a movie and put it out there.  However it’s hard to argue with the logic of “Why not?”

You can go broke, submitting your films to festivals.  So we are targeting only horror festivals and those that are local.  Fortunately two of the top 13 horror film festivals are located in Los Angeles.  Our timing seems perfect because they are currently accepting submissions for September and October release time frames.

So this is going to delay the world-wide release of Lullaby.  Festivals don’t like it when films are released online.  Personally if I watched a good enough film on my computer, iPhone or TV then I’d pay money to watch it on the silver screen.  However they feel differently and they make the rules.

But as with all things: consider the best and the worst that could happen.

The best: we get accepted!

The worst: we get denied and release the film online.

Magic Candle Films Announces Release Date for Lullaby

Magic Candle Films is happy (and relieved) to announce that Lullaby will be released on March 31, 2014.  Starring Dax Spanogle and Lindsey Shaheen, Lullaby is a story about a serial killer and how nobody is safe.

It has been a lot of work getting the film to this point.  Many people dedicated hours of their time, working to produce the best quality film.

Look for more information on our Facebook page:

We’re looking forward to your feedback on our film!

Events coming up:

This Saturday, March 29th, Lullaby will be shown at an Art Festival in Long Beach.

Sunday, March 30th, will be the premiere of Lullaby.

A Post-Production “Behind the Scenes” video is coming in April, 2014.

Post Production Update: Editing

We have just completed the final edits to Lullaby the Film.

Our editor of choice is FCPX.  As many others have pointed out, this is purely a choice and not any kind of slam against other NLE’s that are out there.

For the propeller heads out there:

  • Video was shot in Full HD (1920 by 1080)
  • For most shots, we had two Canon’s rolling with sound capture.  This helped to capture the Master Shot, OTS and ECU if required.
  • Most number of takes per shot: 3
  • For any given scene, we had six shots and 3 audio tracks to choose from.

  • 15″ MacBook Pro (2012)
  • Thunderbolt External Drive
  • ViewSonic Full HD Monitor

FCPX has an excellent Multicam editor built right into it’s software.  The analysis engine behind this allows you to align multiple takes with different cameras and align them into a single clip.

This allows us to complete a rough cut of a 6 minute short in under an hour.  From there, it was deciding on which angle would be better.  With technology today, you spend more time being creative and less time haggling with technology.

The next step, as mentioned previously, is to move into sound editing.

It’s a Wrap on Lullaby

Dax_CliffAt 7:00 last night, we filmed the martini shot.  With the yell of the word “Cut”, production on the slasher short Lullaby came to an end.

The cast and crew did a great job.

We’ll be back, posting more photos and updates over the next few weeks.  We also took plenty of Behind the Scenes (BTS) footage.

Casting for Lullaby is Complete

casting_call_camera_image2We had a great turnout for our casting call for our slasher short Lullaby.

It was grueling but we were able to select the right actors for the roles of our two lead characters, Sylvester and Lana.

What really helped during the selection process was recording everyone’s audition.  Even though everyone did a great job, after a while you start remembering bits and pieces of auditions and can’t remember who really did what.  If that made sense.  Anyway we were able to spend two days reviewing the auditions and selecting those cast members who embodied our characters the best.

Next we move into rehearsals and then finally it’s film day!
